Romanians head to the polls on Sunday for a re-run of final November’s presidential election, which was annulled following reviews of international interference. That vote had seen the shock victory of a beforehand unknown far-right unbiased candidate: Calin Georgescu. An isolationist and ultra-nationalist, Georgescu has ties to neo-Legionary teams, which have roots within the pre-war Iron Guard fascist motion. This stance is more and more resonating with voters within the “sovereigntist” camp, whereas alarming liberal circles. Although Georgescu’s candidacy was later struck down by the Constitutional Courtroom, he’s being changed by George Simion, who has vowed to make use of each means essential to propel Georgescu to energy.
