Randi Weingarten, left-wing activist and president of the second-largest lecturers’ union in america, is leaving the Democratic Nationwide Committee (DNC), citing disagreements with management and dismay on the course of the committee.
Weingarten, who heads the American Federation of Lecturers (AFT) and has been an influential member of the DNC for 23 years, wrote a letter to DNC Chair Ken Martin indicating that she is at odds with committee management, Politico first reported.
“Whereas I’m proud to be a Democrat, I look like out of step with the management you might be forging, and I don’t wish to be the one who retains questioning why we aren’t enlarging our tent and actively making an attempt to have interaction increasingly of our communities,” she wrote in a June 5 letter.
“As all the time, the AFT will proceed to be a pacesetter in electing pro-public schooling, pro-working household candidates and might be particularly engaged within the 2025-26 elections,” she added.
Weingarten lately defended former DNC vice chair David Hogg, who was ousted from the committee final week. The vote in Could got here as Hogg, a gun management activist and Marjory Stoneman Douglas Excessive College taking pictures survivor, was reported to be planning to spend tens of millions funding major candidates in opposition to “ineffective members of Congress.”

Weingarten in the end declined the committee’s provide to reappoint her as an at-large member of the DNC. Weingarten sat on the DNC’s guidelines and bylaws committee since 2009 and had been a delegate to Democratic conventions since 1992.
The DNC didn’t reply to Politico’s request for remark by the point of publication.
