Born as Lhamo Dhondup in 1935 to a farming household, the 14th Dalai Lama was simply two years outdated when he was recognized because the reincarnation of the Thubten Gyatso, the thirteenth Dalai Lama.

In 1940, he was moved from his residence, a small hamlet in northeastern Tibet, to the Potala Palace - which was as soon as the seat of the Dalai Lama - and declared the non secular chief of Tibetans. He was additionally given a brand new identify: Tenzin Gyatso.
