Amid the virtually monochrome panorama of bare-brick buildings within the high-altitude Bolivian metropolis of El Alto, taller constructions painted in garish colors and mirrored glass stand out, topped with big statues of popular culture figures similar to Batman and Iron Man.
The extravagant structures are known as “cholets”, a mix of chalet and cholo, the time period used for folks of Indigenous roots who moved to city areas whereas retaining their cultural traits.
