When a British diplomat led the primary formal commerce mission to China to fulfill the Qianlong emperor in 1792, he introduced with him an array of textiles, astronomical fashions and sword blades. One providing was extra audacious than the remainder: six vases of jasperware, the blue and white pottery created by Wedgwood. China could have invented porcelain, however Josiah Wedgwood of Stoke-on-Trent created a transnational pottery empire, whose story was synonymous with commerce, colonialism and the formation of British id.
