The opening speeches by the Tory chief, Kemi Badenoch, and her shadow chancellor, Mel Stride, to their celebration convention have been loud with conviction however skinny on substance. They felt like ritual incantations in a world turned the other way up. Mr Stride’s pitch – £47bn of financial savings by way of welfare cuts and enterprise rebates – is an empty promise given the celebration’s standing within the opinion polls. However it’s a tenet of modern-day Toryism to evangelise austerity to the poor and indulgence to the rich.
