The Venezuelan opposition politician María Corina Machado has gained the Nobel peace prize for her dogged wrestle to rescue the South American nation from its destiny as “a brutal, authoritarian state”.
Machado, 58, a conservative typically described as Venezuela’s Iron Girl, has spent the final 12 months dwelling in hiding after her political motion was extensively believed to have beaten the country’s president, Nicolás Maduro, within the July 2024 presidential election.
