No different European nation has such a slender base of proprietorship as Scotland. Half of all privately owned rural land is held by 421 individuals or entities. The roots of such disparities lie prior to now. The 18th- and Nineteenth-century Highland clearances emptied the glens and readied them for personal takeover. On the continent, and finally in England, the good estates have been damaged up by inheritance and land taxes. By comparability, Scotland remains to be feudal in scale.
