Curated by historian Sudeshna Guha, the exhibition centres on folios from The Folks of India, the influential eight-volume photographic survey printed between 1868 and 1875. From this core, it expands outward to incorporate albumen and silver-gelatin prints by photographers comparable to Samuel Bourne, Lala Deen Dayal, John Burke and the studio Shepherd & Robertson – practitioners whose pictures helped outline the visible language of that point.
