The prime minister’s feedback about looking for nearer relations with the EU are to be welcomed as a step in the correct path (Starmer requires ‘bold’ new UK-EU ties as Trump threatens to stop Nato, 1 April). But a piecemeal method to repairing the harm finished by Brexit is unlikely to succeed.
A genuinely “bold” plan can be for Labour to announce a referendum on whether or not the UK ought to open negotiations on re-entry to the EU, promising a normal election to safe a mandate to implement the proposal ought to the British public vote in favour. It could permit the federal government to grab the initiative, offering it with a difficulty round which to rally a broad base of electoral help.
