In 1976, night-shift steelworkers at Templeborough – then the world’s largest electrical arc plant – broke a manufacturing document. A letter from Prime Minister Jim Callaghan awaited them, hailing the shift a triumph for the state-owned plant and for Britain. It is perhaps again to the longer term after Sir Keir Starmer greeted Scunthorpe staff this weekend, to mark his authorities taking management of British Metal from its Chinese language house owners.
