If the present ceasefire in Gaza holds, it’ll mark the much-needed finish to an indefensibly merciless warfare. However the longer-term image, and whether or not one more lethal conflagration might be prevented, is one other matter. One issue — not the one one, however an enormous one — is whether or not the Israelis might be satisfied that they need to give peace negotiations a severe likelihood.
