If the present ceasefire in Gaza holds, it can mark the much-needed finish to an indefensibly merciless conflict. However the longer-term image, and whether or not one more lethal conflagration will be prevented, is one other matter. One issue — not the one one, however a giant one — is whether or not the Israelis will be satisfied that they need to give peace negotiations a severe likelihood.
