Senegal is celebrating Le Grand Magal, one in all Africa’s largest spiritual gatherings. Tens of millions of worshippers are converging on the town of Touba, within the nation’s central-western area, in response to the decision of Cheikh Ahmadou Bamba, founding father of the Mouride Muslim brotherhood. Already acknowledged as a part of Senegal’s nationwide cultural heritage, the occasion is now looking for inclusion on the UNESCO World Heritage Record.
