“I’d contend that it is extra destabilising for Germans than it’s for the British or the French, as a result of the British and the French have the flag to rally round, a way of nationhood and historical past. However for post-war Germany, it was all about beginning afresh. And it was a couple of rules-based order, regardless of how incomplete that is likely to be. And that, in so some ways, was the fundamental tenet of German international coverage. And so they now see the struggle to their east, and to their west [there is] the buddy and ally, and the overseer that they relied upon [that] they really feel is not any extra.
