The southern Indian state of Kerala has defended its choice to introduce Zumba courses in public colleges, after the transfer sparked protests from non secular teams earlier this week.

Some 14,000 state-run colleges in Kerala have been requested to organise every day Zumba periods as a part of an anti-drug marketing campaign launched by the federal government final month.

The choice has been bitterly opposed by some Hindu and Muslim organisations within the state, who say the dance is a type of "cultural invasion".

Protests first started when the Kerala authorities launched a slew of measures to counter the rising use of medication amongst college college students final month.

The Bharatiya Vichara Kendram, a right-wing organisation which describes itself as a gaggle of "Hindu intellectuals", echoed this view.

In an announcement earlier this week, the organisation's Director, R Sanjayan, known as Zumba a "international" import and stated that imposing it on college students within the identify of combating drug use was "malicious".
