Jury awards $19.7M to harmless bystanders shot by Denver police officer

Six bystanders injured throughout a 2022 police capturing in Denver will share almost $20 million in damages after a jury dominated of their favor, their attorneys introduced on Friday.

The $19.7 million award stems from a civil lawsuit filed in opposition to the Denver Police Department over the July 17, 2022, capturing.

Officer Brandon Ramos earlier pleaded responsible to misdemeanor assault, receiving probation and dropping his certification to function a police officer.

Ramos resigned in February 2024, in response to a Denver Police spokesperson, who declined to touch upon the decision.

On the time of the capturing, Ramos was assigned to a gun violence prevention crew that patrolled Denver’s Lower Downtown neighborhood – dwelling to Coors Area and a nightlife hall – when he and two fellow officers opened hearth on a person, later recognized as Jordan Waddy, after he had drawn a handgun.

The victims included one who was shot within the arm and required surgical procedure, one other who was struck within the again by a bullet that exited via her arm and a 3rd who was grazed on the foot.

The plaintiffs' attorneys mentioned in a joint assertion that the jury's award for damages "acknowledges the struggling that these six victims endured by the hands of an officer who vowed to serve and defend."

Lawyer Omeed Azmoudeh mentioned the award sends "a transparent message about police conduct" and that bystanders "aren't only a backdrop you could’t take into consideration."
