Activists and opposition leaders have warned that El Salvador is following Venezuela’s path in the direction of dictatorship after the Central American nation’s congress scrapped presidential time period limits, paving the way in which for Nayib Bukele to hunt indefinite re-election.
“Democracy in El Salvador has died,” opposition congresswoman Marcela Villatoro declared late on Thursday because the legislature – during which Bukele’s Nuevas Concepts celebration controls 90% of seats – accepted the extremely controversial constitutional reform, by 57 votes to 3.
