In a landmark survey, College of Newcastle researchers mapped a beforehand hidden koala inhabitants on the outskirts of Newcastle, NSW. The research estimated about 4,357 koalas throughout roughly 67,300 hectares of bushland (208 websites). Additionally they discovered greater than 290 koalas in Sugarloaf State Conservation Space, a area with few prior information. Native researcher Daryn McKenny, who grew up close by and first reported seeing a koala there years in the past, contributed his data and sightings to the mission. The findings present koalas can survive – and even thrive – in peri-urban forests, underscoring the necessity to shield these fringe habitats.
