A vicious heatwave has engulfed southern Europe, with punishing temperatures which have reached highs of 46C (114.8F) in Spain and positioned virtually the whole thing of mainland France below alert.
Excessive warmth, made stronger by fossil gasoline air pollution, has for a number of days scorched Portugal, Spain, France, Italy and Greece as southern Europe endures its first main heatwave of the summer time.
