One hundred years in the past, the Italian aviator Francesco de Pinedo was trying the unprecedented feat of crossing the Indian subcontinent in a flying boat. He later splashed down on the Tiber in Rome to nationwide acclaim, having flown through Asia to Australia and again over seven months, taking off and touchdown in water 80 instances.
