Donald Trump’s tour of Gulf nations this week is notionally state enterprise. The president has mentioned commerce, funding and defence. However the boundary between statecraft and self-aggrandisement is blurred. To honour the US president, the federal government of Qatar has supplied him a Boeing 747 plane. This “flying palace”, price round $400m, would function an alternative choice to Air Power One as Mr Trump’s private jumbo.
