The Supreme Courtroom dealt a big blow to President Trump’s commerce agenda on Friday, ruling 6-3 that his sweeping international tariffs imposed underneath the Worldwide Emergency Financial Powers Act have been unlawful. Chief Justice John Roberts authored the bulk opinion, joined by the courtroom’s three liberal justices and — in a surprising transfer — two Trump-appointed conservatives, Neil Gorsuch and Amy Coney Barrett. The ruling instantly invalidated the so-called “reciprocal” tariffs Trump introduced on Liberation Day, together with further levies tied to the fentanyl disaster, probably exposing the U.S. Treasury to tons of of billions in refund claims from companies that paid the now-illegal duties.
