In 1983, the College of California, San Diego, created the Black Alumni Scholarship Fund (BASF). Operated and funded by the college, the scholarship backed the schooling of black college students—who at the moment made up simply 2 p.c of UCSD—and offered them with mentorship and research overseas alternatives.
