Writer Stephen King apologized Friday for a now-deleted social media publish during which he claimed that assassinated conservative activist Charlie Kirk advocated for "stoning gays to dying."

"He advocated stoning gays to dying. Simply sayin’," King posted to X on Thursday.

Following fierce backlash on-line, King deleted the publish and apologized.

"I apologize for saying Charlie Kirk advocated stoning gays. What he really demonstrated was how some folks cherry-pick Biblical passages," he wrote.

Kirk, a 31-year-old father of two, was shot and killed throughout a campus occasion at Utah Valley College on Wednesday.
