The sovereignty of the Falkland Islands rests with Britain, Downing Road stated right this moment, following a report that america may assessment its place as punishment for Britain’s stance on the battle in Iran.

The spokesperson was responding to an inner Pentagon e mail reported by Reuters which outlined choices for the US to punish NATO allies it believes did not help the US militarily in its battle with Iran.

These choices included reviewing the US place on Britain’s declare to the Falkland Islands, in addition to suspending Spain from NATO. Spain’s Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has been a vocal critic of the US battle with Iran.

The Falklands are a British abroad territory within the south-west Atlantic. Britain and Argentina fought a 10-week battle over the islands in 1982 after Argentina’s navy dictator, Leopoldo Galtieri, ordered an invasion.

Argentina’s President Javier Milei, an ally of Trump’s, stated in 2024 that his authorities would set out a “roadmap” towards Argentine sovereignty over the islands. The Downing Road spokesperson burdened that the Falklands had voted “overwhelmingly” in favor of remaining a British abroad territory.
